Return of Uniformed Groups to Camille Henry

Members of the Camille Henry Red Cross Branch display their certificates after enrollment on June 14th

There has been a marked absence of uniformed groups at the Camille Henry Memorial School.  This has by no means detracted from the quality of life here. However, it is something that was sorely missing. This period of longing is done. With the advent of the 11th Camille Girl Guides Company and the Camille Henry Red Cross Branch, CHMS now has not one, but two uniformed groups.

The Girl Guides and Brownies have been part of this school’s culture for quite a few seasons. They were re-introduced to CHMS in March, 2014, under the leadership of Ms Clara Staphane and Ms. Dianna Phillip respectively.

Students are recruited from Grades One to Five and meetings are held every Friday from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Unlike at the primary schools, there are not many troops at the secondary schools and so, even  after they have entered into a secondary school , students are encouraged to remain in their current patrol.

The Guides and Brownies have acquired a variety of skills which lead to badges since their enrolment on the 2nd of February 2015.

They include:

  • Self Esteem Badge
  • World Thinking Day Badge
  • Environmental Badge
  • Surfing the Net Badge

Being a very dynamic organization, many happenings have taken place under their organisation such as camps/campfires, Mother’s Day activities, Father’s Day activities, School Assemblies and the list goes on.

The 11th Camille Girl Guides Company meetings and activities will be suspended until the new school year.

Camille Henry Red Cross Branch

Like the Girl Guides, the Red Cross has previously had a presence at the school. Some of our very own staff members were enrolled. That group for whatever reason died off. Nevertheless, thanks to our very own Ms. Willianna Paul and Ms. Tessa Alfred, the Red Cross has made resurgence at CHMS.

Under the leadership of Ms. Paul and Ms. Alfred, are the members of the Camille Henry Red Cross Branch. These students are enlisted from Grades One to Five. The Sixth Graders are not normally recruited to begin the programme as they would have already been in the group before they got to Grade Six. Many secondary schools have a Red Cross branch, thus our students are encouraged to continue when they are no longer at CHMS.

The Camille Henry Red Cross Branch was initiated in February 2015 and has held meetings every Friday since then. Meetings begin at 3:15 p.m. On the last Friday of the month, they welcome a Nozomi volunteer who teaches Japanese craft to the members.

So far, the recruits have learned about the:

  • History of Red Cross
  • Fundamental principles of Red Cross
  • Do’s and Don’ts of Safety:
    • At home
    • In school
    • On the road
    • At the playground.

Currently at 25 members with 19 enrolled, Red Cross members have participated in many activities. Their highlights include the Enrolment Ceremony which took place on June 14th and their Campfire in conjunction with the 11th Camille Girl Guides.

From the 2nd to 5th of October they will be joining the St. Lucia Red Cross youth camp which will be held in Forestiere.

Next term, the recruits will be instructed in basic first aid which includes:

  • Slinging
  • Taking care of cuts
  • C.C.C. – (Check. Call. Care)

In time to come, we anticipate the re-introduction of Scouts to the school which will target both girls and boys.
